| “Cycling” artist Frank Patterson was born in Portsmouth,
England, October 12th 1871, during the reign of Queen Victoria. At that
time, the bicycle was developing as a popular means of transport, opening
up countryside travel to everyone-including Patterson, for whom cycling
art became a life long passion. In a career spanning over 59 years, Frank “Pat” Patterson
illustrated for “Cycling” magazine, “C.T.C. Gazette”,
and numerous other publications, producing many thousands of drawings
chronicling the golden age of the bicycle. “Pat’s” studio
was tucked away at his beloved Pear Tree Farm in the Sussex countryside
, where he worked and raised his family, entertained, and became quite
the country gentleman. Before he passed away on July 17, 1952, Frank
Patterson left a legacy that tells a cycling story unsurpassed in its
skillful use of line, space, detail, powers of observation and mood.
He is recognized the world over as a master of his craft. Alas, very
few colour Patterson works have been available in recent times. Until
now. Created with kind permission of Frank Patterson publicists Janet and Jim Willis, this new series of four water colour enhanced Patterson prints is available to collectors for the very first time. These works are for every cycling enthusiast, past and present, who loves the open country roads. Wind, rain, and shine. Enjoy. |
